Castleknock Hotel and Golf Club, Republic of Ireland
Demonstrating unprecedented speed for an Irish course development, Castleknock was designed by Jonathan Gaunt (then director of G&M Ltd) in 2003, built between April and September 2004 and opened for play in July 2005.
The championship standard 18-hole golf course and practice facilities were built for Monarch Properties Ltd and Tower Hotel Group on land that was previously part of the Somerton House demesne, overlooking the River Liffey. With a par of 72 and a length of 6700 yards, it features large greens, multiple teeing positions and 11 dramatic lakes.
Castleknock’s challenging, strategic design was realised with high quality construction under the supervision of James Healy Associates.
Course manager, John Jennings has managed to produce what some consider to be the best greens in Ireland.
Voted #72 course in Ireland in the May 2007 Edition of Golf Digest Ireland.
Peugeot Golf Guide - Europe’s Top 1000 Golf Courses
This is one of the more ambitious projects around Dublin. Just a few miles from the city centre, what looks to be a real oasis surrounded by trees is home to this 18-hole course, a 140 room hotel, two restaurants, a leisure and beauty centre and the inevitable conference rooms. Golf-wise, the objective was a members course with mandatory high-quality green-keeping all year round, and not necessarily a championship layout. Yardage is not excessive, hazards are more strategic than truly penalizing, topography very acceptable and the style of architect Jonathan Gaunt pleasing and rather discreet. He has taken very special care over the par 3s, well defended by water for the more gung-ho golfers while retaining more receptive areas for the fainter-hearted. Everything has been carefully thought through here with money well spent rather than saved.
