Wokefield Park Golf Club, UK
This course has been created on a stunning parkland site surrounding the Wokefield Park 18th Century mansion house.
The golf course, designed by Jonathan Gaunt in 1996, formed part of a £7 million redevelopment of an already successful 200-bed conference facility where Initial Style Conferences plc (now a DeVere Venue, owned by the Alternative Hotel Group (AHG)) has its headquarters.
The site is undulating with numerous changes in level, allowing dramatic views over mature oaks, wellingtonias and water features within the golf course and to the rolling hills beyond. The design was sympathetically prepared following consultation with English Heritage, in order to integrate the golf course into an historic landscape setting.
In relation to this in 1998, one year after the course opened for play, the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) commended the project for it’s positive contribution to the environment and recognised it as a National Award Winner – commending the contractor, the golf course architect and the client in co-operating together to perfect an award-winning scheme. This is the only time the BALI has commended a golf course for such an award.
The 18-hole course offers great challenge to all golfers. There are multiple teeing areas on each hole, and the course measures 6900 yards from the back tees down to 5750 yards off the front markers.
Wokefield Park has already played host to a number of top amateur and professional tournaments.
