Golf course restoration and renovation

Gaunt Golf Design is currently advising more than 20 existing golf clubs in UK and Ireland. Since 1990, Jonathan has undertaken numerous course audits, reviews and restoration work at more than 100 private members golf courses in Europe – some of them originally designed by the greatest golf course architects of their era: Harry S Colt (Hendon GC); Alister MacKenzie (Cavendish GC, Headingley GC, Harrogate GC); Tom Simpson (Royal Antwerp GC, Huddersfield GC); John Abercromby (Worplesdon GC); Willie Park jnr (West Hill GC).

At West Hill GC and at Worplesdon GC (both in Surrey, UK) can be seen excellent examples of the kind of restoration work that Jonathan undertakes – taking into account the original design intentions, whilst remaining focused upon the needs of modern players. Both courses are closely located, within 1km of each other, set within mature heath, oak and silver birch woodland, but, because the courses were originally designed by two different architects: Willie Park jnr at West Hill and John Abercromby at Worplesdon – they have very different design styles. The bunkering at West Hill could be described as more “natural-looking”, whereas the bunkers at Worplesdon are more “maintained” and sharp-edged. These are characteristics of the original designs – as seen in old black and white photographs on the walls of the clubhouses – they provided excellent reference points before we undertook the work.
