Donald Steel

Donald Steel

In 2007, the renowned British Golf Course Architect, Donald Steel, agreed to collaborate with Gaunt Golf Design Limited on high profile design projects, whilst still retaining their independence as individual golf course architects. Donald and Jonathan share the same basic philosophy for golf course design, with a preference for natural and traditional designs and a belief that golf course architecture obeys no rules.

Donald’s career spans over 45 years, which started at the young age of 23 as a golf correspondent for the Sunday Telegraph. His continued writing career saw him go on to become a successful co-author/editor of ten specialist books on golf.

In between writing and designing golf courses, Donald also found time to play golf and, in fact, played as an amateur in the 1970 Open Championship and in the same year represented England at an International level. He believes that his experience in playing the game of golf at a high level has been an essential qualification in making him the golf course architect he is today.

Donald and Jonathan have a combined total of over 60 years’ experience in the golf industry and have worked on golf projects all over the world, including countries as far afield as Africa and Sri Lanka. Their experience in working on a variety of challenging projects has taught both architects to be very adaptable and flexible in their approach to the design of every new golf course, allowing the site to dictate the final design.

We believe the partnership of Donald Steel and Gaunt Golf Design Limited, will prove to be a formidable team in the golf industry and provide clients with the luxury of a design service which combines the talents of two very successful architects in their own rights.
